Over the last two decades, theorycrafters have mathematically "solved" Classic WoW. While experimentation is fun while leveling, endgame raiding and PvP rely heavily on standard, highly optimized "cookie-cutter" builds. Here are a few legendary examples:
The undisputed king of Phase 1 and Phase 2 raiding (Molten Core and Blackwing Lair). Because almost all enemies in the early raids are highly resistant or completely immune to Fire damage, Mages must spec deep into Frost to grab Ice Barrier and Frostbite, while putting 20 points into Arcane for the passive Evocation and clearcasting buffs.
The ultimate PvP terror. This Arms/Fury hybrid build rushes to the bottom of the Arms tree to grab Mortal Strike (which reduces enemy healing by 50%), while utilizing the mid-tier Fury talents for Enrage and Piercing Howl to prevent enemies from escaping.
The highest consistent single-target melee DPS in the game. It completely abandons the stealthy Subtlety tree in favor of the Combat tree's passive hit rating, sword specialization (which grants extra attacks), and the massive cooldowns Blade Flurry and Adrenaline Rush.
The first time you reset your talents at your class trainer, it costs 1 Gold. The second time costs 5G, then 10G, 15G, 20G, 25G, up to a hard cap of 50 Gold. If you go one full month without respeccing, the cost will decay by 5G (down to a minimum of 10G). Because 50G takes hours to farm, swapping between a PvP and PvE spec every week is incredibly punishing.
While classes like Paladins, Druids, and Shamans are designed as hybrids, the reality of Classic WoW endgame is strict. If you want to raid on a hybrid class, 95% of guilds will force you to spec into the Restoration/Holy trees to heal. "Retribution" Paladins or "Balance" (Boomkin) Druids are generally considered "meme-specs" because they run out of mana too quickly and do poor damage compared to pure DPS classes like Mages or Rogues.
Yes, massively. Human Warriors and Rogues get a passive +5 to Sword and Mace skill. This effectively reduces the chance for bosses to dodge or parry their attacks, which completely changes how they value "Hit Rating" talents compared to Orcs or Tauren. You should always factor your race into your weapon specialization talents.
