A fast mental shortcut for UK tipping is to start with 10% by moving the decimal one place to the left. For a £48 bill, 10% is £4.80. To estimate 15%, take half of the 10% value (which is 5%), then add it back. In this example, 5% is £2.40, so 15% is £7.20.
For 20%, just double the 10% value. For 12.5%, take 10% and add a quarter of that amount (2.5%). These quick methods help you check totals even when service charge details are unclear on the receipt.
| Service Type | Typical UK Tip | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Restaurants | 10-15% | Check whether a service charge is already included. |
| Taxis | Round up the fare | Many people round to the nearest pound. |
| Food Delivery | £1-£2 | Often given for prompt or difficult deliveries. |
| Hairdressers / Barbers | Around 10% | Tip based on satisfaction and regular service. |
In many UK restaurants, an optional or discretionary service charge (often 12.5%) is added automatically to the bill. This is different from a voluntary tip left separately. If a service charge is already present, you do not need to add an additional tip unless you want to reward exceptional service. Because it is discretionary, you can ask for it to be removed if service was not satisfactory.
