In 2020, researchers at UC San Diego published a groundbreaking study comparing the DNA methylation (how DNA ages over time) of Labrador Retrievers to humans. They created a new, complex mathematical formula: Human Age = 16 × ln(Dog Age) + 31. While fascinating, it requires a scientific calculator to use (as it involves natural logarithms), and currently only perfectly matches Labrador Retrievers. Because of the size differences, "senior" status arrives at different times. Small dogs are usually considered seniors around age 11 or 12. Medium dogs around age 10. Large dogs hit senior status around age 8, and giant breeds are considered seniors as early as 5 or 6 years old.
Veterinarians use several physical markers to estimate age. The most reliable is checking the teeth: puppies have pristine white teeth, while dogs around 3-5 years old will show tartar buildup and dulling.
